Air Jordan 2012
02.14.12 (3:50 am)   [edit]

The Air Jordan 2012 release dates will hopefully continue the success of the Jordan 2011. It has all sorts of new technology, and is almost guaranteed to meet the needs of any basketball player. Lightweight, more cushioning, and more support are offered in the new model, so it easily carries on the tradition of being a breakthrough basketball shoe.

The Air Jordan 2012 focuses more on the hardwood aspects, rather than the lifestyle aspects. In other words, this is a shoe that many may not want to wear casually, but only on the court. That may not seem to be normal when you think of a Jordan shoe. There are a few colorways that are slated to drop in 2012, but a black/red colorway has yet to be seen. Should Brand Jordan even bother making a bred 2012 Jordan model? It makes sense, but it remains to be seen.

We will pay close attention to the Air Jordan Release Dates dropping to see what colorways will be released.

Rapper Trina Pictures
12.28.11 (10:01 pm)   [edit]

The pics of Trina the rapper has always made her the baddest chick coming out of Miami. Other female rappers can't match her style not to mention her body. She is extremely sexy to be an older rap artist in the game. Nicki Minaj has come along to give her a challenge but look how many years it took to do that.

It will be a minute before another woman lyricist in hip hop can even be considered to what these two chicks mean in the game.

What Is Music Copyright Infringement
03.01.10 (3:00 pm)   [edit]
Music copyright infringement is a huge problem in the industry these days. It is estimated that tens of millions of dollars are lost each year because people are purchasing and downloading illegal music instead of buying it from legitimate distributors. This action, while it may gain consumers short-term monetary savings, is hurting the entire music industry in the long run and has begun to effect their ability to produce music and sign new artists. Every time that a new album is produced the label, artist, and songwriter sign a contract that denotes the percentage of revenue that they get from the sale of each album. Once a profit is made, revenue begins to be paid out. However, if not enough CDs sell to recoup the cost of production and distribution then no one makes any money. If no one is making money on their music then there is very little incentive, especially on the part of the label, to produce more music in the future. This is why music copyright infringement is such a serious problem. With the advent of CD burners and the internet there are many ways for even the least tech savvy person to pirate music. One example of music copyright infringement is borrowing a CD from a friend and burning a copy of that CD for yourself. Now you own the music but you didn't have to pay for it. This sounds a lot like stealing. Another huge example of music copyright infringement is visiting file sharing sites and downloading music off the servers of complete strangers. In this way people have built up huge music libraries without spending a dime. You may say that you are only using it for private purposes and not selling your pirated music. That doesn't matter; if you own music that you did not pay for you are performing music copyright infringement.

What Is The History Of Chess
01.12.10 (1:03 am)   [edit]

The game of chess has been a round for ages. Unfortunately, no one really knows how many ages. The earliest evidence hints to chess being played in India around the 6th century AD, but some believe chess may have its beginnings rooted as early as 2000 BC. It was around the 15th century in Europe that chess sets and chess as a game began to more closely reflect chess as we know it today. It was in the 1800's that tournaments, clocks, championships, and titles like Grandmaster were introduced.

It's believed that chess originated in India and spread from there to Persia. The conquering of Persia by the Arabs introduced the game to the Muslim community, which in time led to the introduction of the game to Europe. Chess came to a head during the Renaissance in Europe where chess was a part of nobility. It was known as more of strategic tool than simply a game. From there, chess branched out to more common uses, such as tools for teaching the different classes of people, human duties, and morality. Over time the game of chess evolved into the game and sport that it is better known as today.

Chess can now easily be considered as the most popular game in the world. Millions of players join together in hundreds of countries around the world each day and sit down at a chess set to play a game of competition, wit, patience, strategy, and strength. Recently, chess began to find great interest among children as schools and parents recognize the social and intellectual benefits associated with the game. Computers and internet technology has also brought about an increase in the skill level of chess players.

Looking for a great place to find chess sets? I've found that Wholesale Chess has a great collection of of chess sets for clubs and individuals.

Plies the Rapper Has Hot Tattoos
09.11.09 (2:18 pm)   [edit]
Everybody knows that rappers rock tattoos to stay street as far as credibility is concerned. Rapper Plies tattoos are on his chest and arms. I'm sure people get a chance to see them often being that he is in Florida where it's crazy hot. Having no shirt on is not something that is very unusual down 95 South.

Rap Music - History and Genres
11.14.08 (12:47 am)   [edit]

Those who are young or relatively new to the HipHop culture don't realize that Rap Music has many different genres:

East Coast: The East Coast, most notably New York City, was the genesis for rap music hitting the mainstream. Run-D.M.C. led the pack, with Rakim and Big Daddy Kane also breaking through to make rap emerge as a national phenomenon.

West Coast: While HipHop was cooking in the East, West Coast rap music gained national recognition in the mid-1980s with performers like Ice T and Too $hort.

Dirty South: While most of the music world's attention focused on rap coming from New York and Los Angeles, HipHop artists in the South were turning to independent music labels to release their work. Geographically, the Dirty South genre encompassed places as diverse as Houston, Birmingham, and Miami, and was greatly influenced by Ghetto Mafia in the mid-1990s. Musically, Dirty South rap is known for is danceabilty and rhythmic delivery.

Gangsta Rap: Some say Gangsta Rap first emerged on the West Coast with N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" release, while others credit Ice T with taking Gangsta Rap to national acclaim. Characterized by lyrics glamorizing elements of a criminal lifestyle, violence, promiscuity, misogyny, and materialism, Gangsta Rap's controversy came to a head with the murder of the West Coast Tupcac Shakur in 1996, and the subsequent murder of the East Coast's The Notorious B.I.G. in 1997.

Pop Rap: Known for its widespread, mainstream appeal, Pop Rap's first breakout star was LL Cool J. The Fresh Prince and MC Hammer quickly rose to the top of the Pop Rap scene and the music charts with lyrics that were less controversial than those of the Gangsta Rap genre, and thus were more likely to receive radio airplay.

Christian Rap: While HipHop was garnering a reputation for less than savory lyrics and artists for questionable activities, other artists were expressing their faith through HipHop. Christian Rap took off in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rap groups like P.I.D. and S.F.C.

Jazz Rap: Although Jazz Rap has never enjoyed mainstream commercial success, the genre often incorporates Afrocentric and political themes. Gang Starr and Gil Scott-Heron are often cited as two of the first Jazz rappers.

Conscious HipHop: Similar to Jazz Rap, Conscious HipHop has never enjoyed mass commercial success. With an emphasis on social issues, Conscious HipHop isn't overtly political, but rather deals with issues such as poverty and religion.

Electro HipHop: A combination of dance music and rap, Electro HipHop first emerged in the 1980s on the West Coast from artists like Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover. By the mid-1990s, Electro HipHop had pretty much run its course.

New Rap and R&B Music
11.14.08 (12:33 am)   [edit]

The world moves fast these days, and sometimes its just plain hard to keep up with the latest news on our favorite music and releases from our favorite artists. New rap and R&B music comes out nearly every week, and for those with a busy schedule, it can to be a time consuming task just to find out what's new in the hip hop world. So here is a quick over view of what is happening in the hip hop culture today:

Kanye West continues to release chart topping hits such as Coldest Winter, Heartless and Robocop. Labels like GOOD Music and Def Jam Records continue to promote Kanye as one of the hottest names in new rap and R&B music. His latest album, 808s and Heartbreak, is scheduled for release on November 25th, 2008.

Another Def Jam Records artist that is scheduled for a new album release on November 25th is Ludacris. The new album, Theater of the Mind, contains hits like One More Drink featuring T. Pain. The video for One More Drink just became available on November 4th. Other tracks on the new album include What Them Girls Like, Call Up the Homies featuring The Game and Willy Northpole, and Wish You Would featuring T.I.

50 cent has a scheduled release date for his new album, Before I Self Destruct, of December 9th of 2008. Along with the release of the album comes the release of a coinciding movie. The current hit from the up and coming album, is Get Up, which is already available for purchase.

Releasing new rap and R&B music in November is Trick Trick, with his album, The Villian. The Villan is Trick Trick's second album, and contains a re-make of Run DMC's Together Forever, with special guests Kid Rock, Esham, and Proof. The album is scheduled to hit shelves on November 11th.

Jedi Mind Tricks also has a release date of November 11th for the new album, A History of Violence. Fans of this group are excited to see what the new album has to offer.

The Evidence will be releasing the album, The Layover EP, on November 25th. The hit single, For Whom The Bell Tolls, will grace the album and feature accompanying artists will.i.am, Phonte, and Blu.

November 4th brought about the release of Q-tip's latest album, The Renaissance. The album was Q-tip's first release in nearly ten years. Much of the album is based on the life of the hip hop culture, with some songs dedicated to friends that have passed away.

November is a big month for new rap and R&B music, with big name artists releasing long awaited albums. December seems to hold just as much anticipation for those who can't get enough of the hip hop culture.

Hip Hop Heavy Hitters
08.13.08 (2:44 am)   [edit]

The last few years were not a good time for the music industry in terms of album sales. No genre has taken this harder than hip hop, which dropped 44 percent in sales since 2000 and accounted for a mere 10 percent of the total music sales. Despite this, the cash still kept coming in for the hip hop moguls who went beyond being rappers and became big-time entrepreneurs.

In the Forbes' list of hip hop cash kings, the top earners were artists who didn't just produce albums and go on concert tours; they were head honchos of multi-million empires which were banked on the entire hip hop and pop culture. These personalities put their stamp on everything, from sneakers to vitamin water, so much so that were already brands in themselves.

The current top earner in the hip hop industry is Def Jam Recordings CEO Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z. After a supposed retirement in 2003, the rapper staged a recording comeback three years later with his 11th studio album Kingdom Come. The album fared well with 680,000 copies sold on its first week, topping the US Billboard chart.

Album sales are nothing but a small fraction of Jay-Z's wealth though. In March 2007, the rapper earned $204 million, before taxes, in the sale of his clothing brand Rocawear to the Iconix Brand Group. He will still manage the marketing, licensing, and product development of the label and will pocket another $35 million if the brand performs well for the next three to five years.

The business-savvy rapper also co-owns the franchise of 40/40 Club, an upscale sports bar, as well as a small stake in the NBA team New Jersey Nets. In October 2006, he was named co-brand director for Budweiser Select after his single was featured in an Anheuser Busch ad. He also earns about $13 million annually for the distribution of the Scottish vodka Armadale. His income for 2006 was estimated at $34 million. All in all, Jay-Z's wealth as of 2007 amounted to $547 million dollars and he is married to Beyonce.

Sean Combs, now known simply as Diddy after a series of name changes, is the second wealthiest hip hop entertainer although he placed third in the Forbes list of top hip hop earners for 2006. With an estimated net worth of $358 million, Diddy rules over an empire consisting of the record label Bad Boy Records, the Sean John clothing line, the Unforgivable cologne, and two restaurants called Justin's. Forbes placed his earnings for 2006 at $28 million.

Another hip hop millionaire worth an estimated $200 million is 50 Cent. His G-Unit includes a clothing company, a sneakers brand, video games, and a line of fiction. He also owned 10 percent of Glaceau, a line of beverages. When Coca Cola purchased the brand for $4.1 billion, 50 Cent reportedly got $100 million (before taxes). The rapper also owns a condom line and is involved in a number of films. He landed on the number two spot of the Forbes list with a 2006 income of $32 million.

Time magazine once branded hip hop as capitalism with a beat. If so, then these rhyming millionaires are at the helm of it.

Picture Loaders Getting better and better
06.07.08 (10:26 pm)   [edit]

Picture Loaders is a hot new website that is bringing images of celebrities like Flava Flav to the internet. You can find other pics their like hot women in mini skirts and even Buffy the Body images.

What is it about women ans sports?
06.02.08 (2:33 am)   [edit]

I love watching female athletes do there thing. I respect their talent but I can't help watching them move about. For instance Serena Williams breast bouncing is something to watch for hours. something about how they look playing sports is a very big turn on.

What's The Real Tupac Jada Story
02.27.08 (12:35 am)   [edit]

Was Tupac and Jada more than friends? Pictures of them in the past may reveal something more than what they let onto while he was alive. There are hip hop drawings that are surfacing of him and rival rappers that say alot too. I sure wish he was around to record more albums and spit that fire over a Timbaland beat like the one he did for One Republic. The track is hot and definitely not something produced with Fruity Loops 5.

Tragedy and Happiness of Rappers
02.26.08 (12:07 am)   [edit]

Here is the biography of T.I. the rapper that includes information about why he was arrested. Clifford Harris is a mans man with an ego and not even close to a gay rapper like some hip hop artist. He has some issues but not as many as Nasir who is just now recovering from when his mother past away. Speaking of rap artist who have problems ask yourself what other entertainers think of Eminem. If they keep steady they won't end up like Fat Pat. That would be very bad.

Deep Street Hip Hop
02.24.08 (9:30 pm)   [edit]
Graffiti is a part of hip hop and rappers like Plies fits into the entire mold. He has those push and pull factors that the streets love. Plus he is far for what a rap artist like Will Smith use to be. Jay-Z who has dubbed himself as the American Gansta is beyond the reach of most artist in hiphop period. He has even helped former label mate Rick Ross.

The Real Hot Girls
02.24.08 (9:02 pm)   [edit]

Tiffany Pollard is making big waves now that she has done her thing twice on the Flavor of Love and Twice on I Love New York. That's her real name like Deelishes real name is London Charles. Pretty cool huh? Guess what Fergie is called by the government? Oh yeah, J.Lo had her twins and guess what she is calling them.

Why Are Lyrics To Songs So Important
02.23.08 (12:20 am)   [edit]

What makes a good song so appealing to the people who buy CDs and MP3 files? Is it the background beats or the guitar riffs played? Is it the voice of the lead singer or how high he or she can take his vocals to? The truth is that the most important part of most songs, techno possibly being an exception, is the lyrics, or the words of the song. The lyrics are the meat of any song, and are usually the part that is most recognizable from any song. They are an integral part of any music tune and it would be a mistake for any artist to take them lightly.

As mentioned before, the most recognizable part of any song is usually the lyrics. What this means is that when someone is looking for a song they heard on the radio, they will probably remember some key lines from the chorus. They are not, however, likely to remember a well-done guitar solo or something of that sort. While instrumental play is important as well, people usually link songs with the words inside the music. This is because words are not only much easier to remember than instrument music is, they are also easy to translate to someone else. For example, it would be much easier to find a CD if you know the words to a song than if you knew the drum beats from a song.

Lyrics are often commonly considered to be the single artistic part of music as well. While this is certainly not true from a musicians standpoint, as guitars and drums take a lot of practice and time to master, it doesn’t change the fact that many people feel that a good song must have quality lyrics. Good lyrics will relate to a person’s life and make them feel better about a bad situation. Bad lyrics will focus on trivial parts of life that really don’t matter and will have no deeper meaning to them after the song is over. Artists will find that after a while people tire of hearing the same old stuff about showing off gold chains and shaking behinds. Many music fans are looking for songs that have meanings, and this in turn means that artists need to spend more time on their lyrics.

Remember that before it was stated that lyrics are important because of how they can be recognized. This is double-fold when you consider that good lyrics in one song can sometimes single-handedly assure an artists legacy. Journey is one good example of this, as their biggest hit in “Don’t Stop Believing” is a pop culture hit that has never lost fans throughout the decades since it’s release. On the other hand, artists without a standout lyrical song will often find themselves fade out of the picture as their era in music ends.

All in all, lyrics are an important part of any song and the words are the part fans look to the most for inspiration and meaning. Artists who come up with great lyrics are usually the ones most revered long past their prime, so it is important that they focus on this part of a song!

Mariah Carey Touch My Body Pics
02.12.08 (11:11 pm)   [edit]

I have come across come interesting pics of Serena Williams in a bikini as well as Britney Spears and Maria Sharapova. I just lone seeing women in bikini thongs and tight jeans.

Lindsay Lohan is among these pics but she has fell off now that she got involved in drugs. People want to see clean chicks like Tara Reid in the Wicked Weasel bikini pics she has on the Internet.

When it's all said and done Shannon Doherty and Natalie Portman round off a healthy chick list of sexy women. It's all good.

Therapeutic Massages - What Rappers Are Getting Them?
02.08.08 (12:03 am)   [edit]

I have said it time and time again how rap artist can't live without therapeutic massages. After going on tour and being around all kind of DJ equipment like 3 speed turntables and laptop computers full of interviews meetings they need it.

I actually had a chance to interview DJ Bobo and Dj Otzi from Germany for my site Hip Hop Music Classic and they both admit to getting some type of therapist to help relax them while touring.

Did You Really Know Roy Orbison?
02.06.08 (10:46 pm)   [edit]

Roy Orbison was notorious for wearing pitch black sunglasses and people are always asking why did he wear those damn things. there are some obvious answers and there is also some hypothetical answers. Which one will you choose?

Will you Learn A Second Language
02.06.08 (9:10 pm)   [edit]

The United States is being flooded with immigrants and as I continue in the music business I ask the question...Will you learn a second language because I am and it's working out well. Trust me you will get more out of your dollar when you do it.

What Are The Elements of Hip-Hop?
02.05.08 (7:45 pm)   [edit]

The emergence of hip-hop in the early 70's produced four elements, which continue to be mainstays of the genre: disc jockeying or a DJ, break dancing, emceeing or an MC, and graffiti art. How prominent are these elements today and how were they represented during BET's first annual hip-hop awards in Atlanta? Upon acceptance of the "I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award," rap pioneer, Grandmaster Flash paid homage to a host of DJs. According to Flash, DJ's were once the gatekeepers between the record labels and the streets. In 1996, thriving regional radio stations that reflected a community's heart and soul were replaced by media conglomerates with syndicated play lists. Followed by a myriad of changes in music distribution and leadership at radio stations and record labels, the fire that fueled hip-hop's reputation began to fade. To maintain integrity, Flash encouraged a shifting to the way things use to be--where new music was received and circulated by the DJs. Knowing that DJs spend all of their time in tune with the streets via clubs and parties, Flash commented, "It makes sense that [DJs] break a record." Flash also admonished MCs to allow DJs to perform on stage. "The template was designed for DJs to play a part," he said. Embodying the original template, Atlanta's DJ Drama, was among several DJs who held it down on stage alongside notable MCs. Even though break dancing and poppin' are nostalgic forms of hip-hop both are visible in varying forms of dances including the Bay Area's hyphy. Newer dances that help hip-hop maintain its hype include snap, shoulder lean, motorcycle, and chicken noodle soup. DJ Unk and the Big Oomp Camp showed attendees just how easy it was to walk-it-out in sync. While MCs abound in every corner of the globe, talent comparable to the innovators who dominated the 80's and 90's is hard to come by. As hip-hop aficionados anticipate "the new," music executives search desperately for the one or ones who will carry the hip-hop torch to the next phase. Invariably, advances in technology and a shortage of lyricists who have solid albums have caused a noticeable erosion of hip-hop's staying power.

For the past six years, hip-hop was the top-selling genre over R&B and country music and was second only to rock music. This year's lack-luster Billboard ratings are a warning sign of the genre's potential to slow to a lull until new life respires. Pending change, BET Hip-Hop award recipient, Common is the current standard for aspiring lyricists. Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, and T.I. are among his peers. Graffiti art was once an economic menace to society. For years, buildings, buses, trains, sidewalks, etc., were regular targets for unwanted and unappreciated artist tags. Today, graffiti art is perhaps the most embraced aspect of the hip-hop culture. New canvases of the profitable, permanent, and mobile enterprise now include skin (by way of tattoos), clothing, and vehicle wraps. Among the many artists profiling their "tag" or some else's during the awards were The Game, Nelly, Jim Jones, Chamillionaire, T.I., and Juelz Santana. As it relates to the four elements of hip-hop, BET's hip-hop award show recognized exceptional work and contribution to the hip-hop genre by acknowledging the Producer of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Hip-Hop Dance of the Year, and Director of the Year. For a complete listing of award winners, visit: www.bet.com/Music/hiphopawardswin ners.htm?wbc_purpose=Basic& ;WBCMODE=PresentationUnpu blished

Is Timbaland A Great Producer?
02.05.08 (7:34 pm)   [edit]

Timbaland is considered the best hip-hip/rap producer in the United States. He is also the best Pop artist producer Nationwide. Have you ever asked yourself why he is and what is it about his style the makes him stand out from the other hundred thousand producers?

Is Graffiti Really An Art Crime?
02.01.08 (10:01 pm)   [edit]

Graffiti is probably one of the purest art forms to hit the streets. Sure some people might call it art crimes but that does not stop the talent it takes to create beautiful characters and murals with spray paint cans. Just like a tattoo there is no room for mistakes. The huge difference is that graffito is done on a much larger scale and it takes nerves of steal to commit to finishing some of the larger projects. Tagging is usually a quicker option but full commitment to Wildstyle Graffiti Drawings takes much more time and effort. Even names can sometimes take up some serious time. Next time you see these artful color drawings displayed on walls or trains etc..etc...respect the artist that had dedicated some serious time learning how to make them look so good.

Get ready for Spring Break 2008
01.31.08 (10:54 pm)   [edit]

College girls are preparing to get buck wild as spring bring gets closer. There will be thongs all over the place from Florida to Cancun. That means video tapes will be rolling and digital cameras will be clicking. I'm sure with breast augmentation some of these college honeys will be looking like a topless Pamela Anderson. If you are headed to Daytona for black beach week then you will surely see some Vide guerra butts in the sand. Micro bikini thongs and wicked weasels will be the apparel of choice in 2008 due to the fact they reveal the most skin. That's how Emma Watson does it when she is out in the public sands so we expect that young teenage women will follow suit. While your down in Miami say hello to Jamie Lynn spears if you happen to see her pregnant azz. Oh yeah, spray some graffiti on South Beach buildings if you can get away with it.

Seen The Kim Kardashian Sex Videos Yet
07.16.07 (11:11 pm)   [edit]

This is a picture of ya' boy Ray J in the act of getting ready to have sex with Kim Kardashian. If you have never seen this footage then you need to because it's funny as well as entertaining. I'm not sure that her father Robert is enjoying the publicity but that has not stopped her from staying out on the scenes and in the public celebrity eye.

Rappers Who Are Actors - Are They Getting A Bad Rap?
03.11.07 (10:22 pm)   [edit]

Rappers turned actors are generating a lot of buzz, box office and bombast in Hollywood. In the case of the latter, no one has been more vocal than Samuel L. Jackson who has turned down several roles in movies that co-starred rappers. His most recent diss was of 50 Cent in last year’s, “Get Rich Or Die Trying.” Jackson opined, “'It's not my job to lend credibility to so-and-so rapper who's just coming into the business," he told The Sacramento Bee in 2002. ''I know there's some young actor in New York or LA who's spent half his life learning how to act and sacrificing to learn his craft, but he isn't going to get his opportunity, because of some actor who's been created."

In a later interview, Jackson elaborated, saying”I’ve worked in movies that have rappers in them and I didn’t have a problem with that. I don’t cast the movies. But I do think that if somebody’s building a film around some rapper and they come to me with it, I have a right to say no…Acting is a craft – not a whim.”

In the feud with 50 Cent, Jackson said “I like listening to 50 Cent and I can groove to his music but I don't want to groove to him on screen, just yet. Maybe if he does five movies and he shows some talent.” 50 countered, “"So I come from being a rapper, and he comes from being a crackhead," a reference to Jackson’s early drug troubles. The two later squashed things at the Spike Video Game Awards and have signed on to do a picture together.

The criticism on its surface appears unfair. Rappers have a built-in following that generates box office. The movie “Three Kings” starred George Clooney and rappers-turned-actor Ice Cube and Mark Wahlberg. Suppose if it had starred Clooney, with LeVar Burton and Matt Dillon. Could it have achieved the crossover success it had? Furthermore, many rappers have received critical and industry acclaim for their acting acumen. Both Will Smith (“Ali,” 2001) and Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” 2002) have garnered Oscar nominations. Smith has also been a box-office champ with “Independence Day”(1886) and “Men In Black” (1997).

However, in Smith’s case, there are those in the music industry that say he never should have been rapping. Many found his work sophomoric, generic and plainly commercial. While he has always been known for the quality of the roles he has chosen, last year's Smith "comedy" vehicle "Hitch,' lacked laughs and was uninspiring.

Other rappers that have made the transition from vinyl to the big screen includes the late Tupac Shakur (“South Central”), whose screen persona I equate to that of James Dean; Wahlberg (“The Perfect Storm”), LL Cool J (“Deliver Us From Eva”), Busta Rhymes (”Finding Forrester,” “Shaft”) and Ice-T (“Surviving the Game” and as detective Odafun Tutuola in the TV drama “Law & Order: SVU”).

However, several rappers find themselves being typecast as thugs and killers. While Snoop Dogg may have a hardcore legion of fans, it hasn’t necessarily translated to box-office success. Moreover, he’s shown little discretion about his roles, including his turn as the "host" of the "Girls Gone Wild" videos. Snoop also headlined the cast of the worst movie I’ve ever viewed, 1999’s “Urban Menace,” along with other notable flops--"Soul Plane” (2004) and “Starsky and Hutch” (2000). In fairness he received critical notice for his performances in “Bones” (2001) and John Singleton’s 2001 urban tale “Baby Boy.”

The problem with Snoop is that he brings the same persona (himself) to every character he plays and like Keanu Reeves, his range is limited. There have been other rappers who are weak thespians, such as Eve, whose wooden performance in 2004’s “The Cook Out” made Sophia Coppola’s turn in “The Godfather III” look like Meryl Streep. If DMX could do anything else except scowl and speak in a monotone, he too, might garner some “stage cred.”

Most movies rappers appear in are low-budget affairs that allow these neophytes to cut their acting teeth. But the themes hardly vary from the ghetto-quest-for-riches-b y-any-means themes. “Set It Off,” was of this same ilk but benefit from a poignant storyline and pulse-raising action scenes. The cast featured four black women—Queen Latifah. The Vivica Fox, Ella Joyce and Jada Pinkett—in a tale about four females who view bank robberies as a means of escaping the drudgery and hopelessness that encompasses their lives. Since this film, Latifah has gone on to win over fans in films like “Bringing Down The House,” where she co-starred with Steve martin and Eugene Levy.

Ice-T appeared to take a step back with the lightly-regarded and ridiculous plot of “Leprechaun In The Hood,” and as of late hasn’t been seen on the big screen in any roles of note. Plans are for Ludacris and Jay-Z to make their big screen debuts as well. This phenomenon will probably grow, especially since 50s debut in “Get Rich” and Eminem’s turn in “8 Mile.” Both received kudos for their performances. However, one has to question the skills of these “actors, especially when the praise they receive is for playing scenes from their own lives.

Arguably, the most talented and role-conscious of this new breed of "thespians” is Mos Def (born Dante Terrell Smith). He became known to many through his appearances on “Chappelle’s Show,” and his memorable turn as Dr. Vivian Thomas in the HBO’s Something The Lord Made, which earned him a Best Actor Emmy and Globe nomination, along with a Teen Image Award. He also received critical praise for his role as Ford Prefect in the disappointing, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,"

The thirty-three year old Brooklyn native began his career with the rap group Thermo Dynamics, but most of his work was unknown outside of New York’s underground circuit. Using his popularity in rap circles, he teamed with Def Jam’s Russell Simmons to create HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam.” Unlike most of the aforementioned rappers, he began his entertainment career at age fourteen starring in alongside Mare Winningham in the TV movie, God Bless The Child. He also co-starred in the short-lived “Cosby Mysteries.” Recently he starred with Bruce Willis in “16 Blocks.”

This young man is just scratching the surface of his seemingly endless talent. He will bring back “Def Poetry” for a sixth season and later this year will release a new CD. On tap for the multi-talented Brooklynite are three films, currently in pre-production: Stringbean and Marcus, Toussaint, and The Brazilian Job.
